['sɪlɪtəʊ], Alan, englischer Schriftsteller, * Nottingham 4. 3. 1928; stammt aus einer Arbeiterfamilie, war selbst zunächst Fabrikarbeiter, 1946-49 Soldat in Malaya. In seinen zahlreichen Erzählungen und Romanen, die häufig eine pikareske Struktur aufweisen, schildert er mit präziser Milieubeobachtung und psychologisch einfühlsam den Widerstand von Angehörigen der Arbeiterklasse gegen Lebensverhältnisse, die ihnen den Zugang zu ihrer eigenen Identität versperren und sie sozial und politisch unterdrücken. Bekannt wurde besonders die mit den Mitteln des inneren Monologs arbeitende Erzählung »The loneliness of the long-distance runner« (1959; deutsch »Die Einsamkeit des Langstreckenläufers«; verfilmt).
